Fall Is for Gardening!

October might feel like the end of the gardening season—but in Utah, it’s one of the best times to give your landscape a little love.

Cooler days, colorful leaves, crisp mornings… and plenty to do outside before winter arrives.

Your October Garden To-Do List

Plant while the soil is warm.
Fall is a great time to plant many trees, shrubs, perennials and spring-blooming bulbs. Cooler temperatures mean less stress on new plants while roots continue getting established.

Give your soil some love.
Add compost or quality soil amendments now and let nature work them in over the winter.

Mulch before the freeze.
A fresh layer of mulch helps protect roots, conserve moisture and gives garden beds a beautiful finished look.

Clean up—but don't clean up everything!
Leave some seed heads and healthy plant stems standing. They provide winter interest, food for birds and valuable habitat for beneficial insects.
